Sam Bird admitted he was thrilled to secure a place on the podium in the end of season Macau F3 Grand Prix after picking up third place in the prestigious event.
The Briton, who had been hotly tipped to fight for victory in the race last season before being forced out in an accident on the opening lap, started from seventh on the grid after being hampered by a clutch issue in the qualifying race.
After the race had to be restarted following an accident triggered by Daniel Ricciardo going off into the wall at the Solitude Esses, Bird held fifth place early on behind Marcus Ericsson only to lose time trying to get ahead of the Swede when he ran wide.
Bird managed to re-catch the TOM'S driver and made a move stick for fourth and then inherited third in the final laps when ART team-mate Valtteri Bottas was slowed by a wheel issue.
“Macau is my favourite race of the season and this is a great result for everyone that's supported me in my efforts here,” he said. “I want to thank, in particular, the Noble Group, who have been brilliant, ART and Mercedes Benz, for giving me a car worthy of a podium and my managers at CJ Motorsport.”
