Jake Dennis heads a Prema Powerteam 1-2-3 in qualifying for race one at Portimao in European Formula 3, while championship leader Antonio Giovinazzi struggled down in ninth place.
The British driver had been in strong form heading into the opening qualifying after topping FP1 and edged out new Prema Powerteam team-mate Nick Cassidy by 0.061s at the Algarve circuit.
Cassidy, who leads the Asian F3 championship with one round remaining, has seriously impressed since stepping into the recently departed Brandon Maisano's race seat and will start race one alongside Dennis on the front row. Ferrari protégé Lance Stroll completed the Prema Powerteam 1-2-3.
Motopark's Markus Pommer acted as the closest rival to the dominant Prema Powerteam trio in fourth ahead of Thai driver Alexander Albon and former championship leader Charles Leclerc.
Experienced F3 driver Felix Rosenqvist heads the third row to put four Prema's in the top seven with George Russell in eighth.
Championship leader Giovinazzi had been suffering at the Portuguese track all week and could only manage the fourth row in qualifying as Callum Ilott rounded out the top ten.
