Piquet has secured the Brazilian Formula 3 championship with two rounds still to go having claimed 12 wins in 14 races and also dominated to the F3 title in 2014 by taking 11 wins in 16 races.
The young Brazilian feels it is now the right time for him to switch into the European racing scene and after testing with a number of different teams he opted for Dutch squad Van Amersfoort and will move to the Netherlands to be closer to the team base.
“I think that my first year in Europe will be a learning year,” Piquet said. “I certainly will have to cope with several disadvantages compared to the established drivers – particularly in the opening stages of the season. But it's my goal to secure top 10 results in the second half of the season.
“The FIA European F3 Championship is incredibly competitive with grids of over 30 cars. In this championship I have the opportunity to grow as a driver. I like the atmosphere within the team: a relaxed, almost family atmosphere yet with the ambition to win. And they always were involved in the battle for the title, in the recent past.”
Team Principal Frits van Amersfoort says he welcomes the Brazilian with open arms and hopes to produce similar results having worked with another son of an F1 driver, Max Verstappen, who set Euro F3 alight n 2014 before stepping up to F1 this season with Toro Rosso.
“For us it is a big compliment that Nelson and his family opted for us,” van Amersfoort said. “Pedro has got the dedication it takes to be a successful racing driver. We are going to help him turning his ambitions into results.”
