Rosenqvist wins Macau GP to keep 2016 dreams alive

Felix Rosenqvist has given himself an excellent platform to attract prospective race teams as he wins the prestigious Formula 3 Macau Grand Prix for a second consecutive time.

The 2015 FIA European Formula 3 champion is still without a drive for next season and will once again be turning heads towards his direction by securing back-to-back wins around the Guia street circuit with SJM Theodore Racing by Prema Powerteam.

The Swedish driver controlled from the front in Macau after an early battle with fellow Euro F3 front-runner Charles Leclerc to take his second victory in consecutive years at the event.

The 24-year-old says he is delighted to repeat the trick and hails the win in Macau as the perfect way to cap of a successful 2015.

“Winning Macau gets better every time,” Rosenqvist said. “Even with all the preparation you still have to do the job on the track. You also need luck. I was really strong on the first couple of laps so even if Charles passed me I was confident I could repass him. We went aggressive on set-up so my tyres were worse at the end and he caught up. One mistake and he would have been right there – it was a tough race.

“After winning the FIA Formula 3 European championship, this rounds off my season nicely. My first win in Macau was an incredibly beautiful feeling. But to repeat this success is absolutely amazing.

“Many thanks to the guys who set my car up so perfectly for this challenging street circuit and also, of course, to Mercedes-Benz, without whose support this success would not have been possible Wow, what a fantastic day!”

Head of Mercedes-AMG DTM Ulrich Fritz has heaped praise on Rosenqvist's achievements and is hopeful the Swedish driver can secure a racing future but refused to be drawn on any talks of a potential Mercedes DTM drive for 2016.

"Congratulations to Felix Rosenqvist on this great victory,” Fritz said. “Macau is one of the toughest and most challenging street circuits in the world. To win there twice is an outstanding achievement. After picking up the FIA Formula 3 Championship trophy, this is yet another demonstration of what a fantastic talent he possesses.

“I wish Felix well for the future and that he is able to follow in the successful footsteps of previous Mercedes-Benz winners in Macau."
