Nick Cassidy has completed Prema Powerteam's FIA European Formula 3 championship drive line-up for 2016 after impressing in two wildcard outings last season.
The 21-year-old stormed to the Japanese F3 title last year with seven victories from 17 races with Petronas Team Tom's while he also caught the eye in two outings in Euro F3 for Prema, notching up two rostrum results including second place in race one at the Nurburgring.
The two-time Toyota Racing series champion has enjoyed wildcard appearances in Euro F3 for the past three years and in 2016 will line-up for his first full campaign. The New Zealander is relishing the challenge of transition between Japan and Europe as he combines his season with a campaign in Super GT500.
“I am really excited to be joining Prema Powerteam for 2016,” Cassidy said “It is going to be a busy year for me travelling between Europe and Japan where I will compete in the Super GT500 championship with Toms team, but after a great year last year, I feel that I am more than prepared. Ever since my first introduction to the team at Portimão last year I have felt very welcome, and really enjoy the family atmosphere inside the team.”
Prema team boss Rene Rosin says he's delighted to finalise his Euro F3 driver line-up, with Cassidy joining rookie Ralf Aron, Maximilian Gunther and Lance Stroll.
“We could not be more satisfied for the arrival of Cassidy,” Rosin said. “A really experienced driver who already showed some outstanding driving skills throughout his career, especially behind the wheel of Formula 3 cars.
“When we had an open seat at the end of last season, I did not have a single doubt about having him in our team. He did a really good job straight away and he showed the attitude needed to be a part of Prema. That is why we decided to add him to our 2016 line-up.”
In 2015 Prema stormed to the Euro F3 drivers' and teams' titles, with Rosenqvist taking an overdue championship while Jake Dennis ended the year third overall with Stroll in fifth.
