Ferrari junior Zhou steps into EURO F3 with Motopark

Ferrari academy driver Guan Yu Zhou is set to make his debut in the FIA European Formula 3 championship in 2016 with Motopark after graduating from Italian F4 as runner-up.

The Chinese 16-year-old moved from Shanghai to London in 2012 to further his studying while also racing in the European scene. After claiming the 2013 European championship in the Junior Rotax and ABKC S1 Rotax Junior categories, Zhou was quickly signed up by Ferrari's driver academy and has since progressed into single seater racing, finishing runner-up to fellow Euro F3 newcomer Ralf Aron in Italian F4.

Zhou has completed the Motopark Euro F3 line-up joining alongside Sergio Sette Camara, Joel Eriksson and Niko Kari and has set himself the target of a top three finish in the rookie standings.

“My objective this season is to finish inside the top three of the rookie championship,” Zhou said. “At the same me, I want to learn and improve as much as I can.”

Motopark team principal Timo Rumpfkeil is delighted with his Euro F3 driver line-up and overall package and says he was seriously impressed by Zhou after he tested with the team over the winter.

“We noticed his raw talent when he was guesting in a few German F4 meetings,“ Rumpfkeil said. “When he tested in our F3 car, we were mighty impressed with both his speed and his consistency. We're convinced he will stand good chances in this year's rookies' championship.

“I'm very happy with our line-up. Continuing with Camara was a logical choice, which we both wanted from a very early stage onwards. It would have been nice to have another driver with Formula Three experience. But after Eriksson, Kari and Zhou were all so convincing during their tests, we decided to support them on their first steps on the F3 ladder. I'm sure we've got a very competitive package both on the drivers' and the technical front.”
