BRDC F4 rebranded as British Formula 3

Series organisers MSV has confirmed the BRDC F4 championship will transform into the British F3 category for 2016.
Series organisers MSV has confirmed the BRDC F4 championship will transform into the British F3 category for 2016.

Considered a key stepping stone for young drivers aiming to climb the racing ladder to Formula 1, the 2016 season will see drivers compete in a new car, the FA-016 Tatuus-Cosworth, which has lifted performance levels to the F3 level.

The change of name ensures the championship's position as the progression point for national F4 drivers and will act as a feeder series for the FIA European F3 series. The British Racing Drivers' Club will continue to support the championship, which will run alongside British GT for seven of its eight rounds in 2016, effectively restoring the traditional F3/GT line-up.

The British F3 championship was disbanded in 2015, ending a 63-year championship history which saw the likes of Ayrton Senna, Jackie Stewart, Nelson Piquet, Jim Clark, Emerson Fittipaldi and Mike Hakkinen pass through its ranks.

As a national F3 championship, it will also offer FIA Super Licence points for the top five drivers in the overall standings.
