Prema Powerteam has continued its domination of the European Formula 3 championship from last season with Felix Rosenqvist's successors splitting pole positions for this weekend's 2016 season-opening races at Paul Ricard.

Lance Stroll, Williams F1 development driver, claimed his maiden pole position in European Formula 3 in the first qualifying session of the new season and will be joined on the front row for race one by Prema Powerteam team-mate Nick Cassidy having beaten the Kiwi by 0.081s.

Euro F3 rookie Niko Kari impressed for Motopark to head the second row with George Russell as fellow British driver and HitechGP team-mate Ben Barnicoat claiming fifth on the grid for race one.

The second qualifying session saw more of a shake-up but a Prema Powerteam remained on pole thanks to Max Gunther's late effort. On a completely dry track, after morning drizzle had kept the circuit wet for the practice and first qualifying session, Gunther claimed the best advantage from the limited running to take pole by just 0.18s from Russell.

The Brit has traded places with Cassidy from the first qualifying with the Kiwi in third while rookie Ralf Aron made it three Premas in the top four. Joel Eriksson for Motopark completed the top five for the second qualifying session.
