Weiron Ton has been handed a wildcard entry with Carlin for the fourth round of the European Formula 3 championship at Spielberg this weekend.
The Malaysian-born driver will team up with Carlin's regular trio of Alessio Lorandi, Ryvan Tveter and Peter Li at the Red Bull Ring on his debut in the Euro F3 series.
The former Team Lotus development programme driver currently competes in the Pro Mazda championship in America and has experience competing at Spielberg after racing in German F3.
“I'm very grateful for the opportunity Trevor has given me this weekend and it's great to be part of Carlin family,” Tan said. “Obviously my goal is to come here and learn as much as I can; progression is absolutely key.
“I don't have any expectations, these guys have already done loads of testing and three race events already so already have a lot more mileage than me. I'm focusing on doing as much as I can and hopefully doing a good job for the team.”
Carlin had hoped to put reigning Formula E champion Nelson Piquet Jr in its fourth car last weekend at Pau but his driver application was rejected by the FIA due to a breach in sporting regulations.
Team boss Trevor Carlin is thrilled to have a full company of drivers at the Red Bull Ring and is not placing too much pressure on the Malaysian who is stepping in to Raoul Hyman's drive after the South African's funding fell through to make his debut in the series.
“We're delighted to have Weiron join us this weekend,” Carlin said. “We were able to watch his progress pretty closely last season in the Pro Mazda Series which runs on the Mazda Road to Indy alongside Indy Lights. He has a great attitude both in and out of the car and I'm very pleased we finally have chance to work together.
“It will be a tough learning curve for Weiron this weekend; adapting back to an F3 car against drivers that have been preparing and racing in the series for several months, but if he focuses on making steps forward with every session, we'll be very pleased.”
