Ultimate Motorsport enjoyed a solid start to the F3 Masters weekend at Zolder but was left with work to do following qualifying at the Belgian circuit.
Double British F3 race winner Michael Devaney was quickly up to speed in his pre-qualifying session and his pace was easily high enough to book himself a place in the top 20 shootout.
Unfortunately for the Irish driver, a red flag stopped him in his tracks just as he was getting up to speed in the session and with only two laps available when the session restarted, Devaney found his challenge hit by traffic and he could manage only the 19th quickest time.
"For the first time in quite a while, I've actually been happy with the set-up of the car,” he said. “It feels good. We didn't change much between the two qualifying sessions and I doubt we'll make many for the race. We were just unfortunate not to be able to get a lap in at the end.
“There was so little time after the red flag and I just couldn't get the best out of the tyres in that time: it was like driving on ice. Having said all that, this is the sort of race where anything can happen so we're looking forward to a strong race tomorrow."
Things fared less well for Esteban Guerrieri, who set the fastest time of all during the wet practice session on Friday. The Argentine, returning to Ultimate's F3 team for a one-off appearance, was hoping to carry Friday's form into qualifying, but couldn't find a suitable set-up for the first session and missed out on a place in the shootout.
He improved the set-up between the qualifying sessions and lowered his best time by six tenths of a second this afternoon, but it was already too late to get back into the top 20 and he will line up 29th tomorrow.
"Yesterday was very good,” he said. “It was difficult to tell where everybody was because the conditions were changing so much all day, but still I was confident for today. Qualifying was not good and the race will be very tough. I think it will be wet, which is better for me being so far down, but when there are incidents, like we expect, you sometimes get caught up in them so it's not always good. I'll just try to have a good race and get the best result we can."
Ricardo Teixeira was also troubled with his set-up and will have to start the race from the back of the grid.
