Oz: Mill steps up for finale
1 January 1901
Australian Formula 3 Championship Trophy Class winner Andrew Mill will get to step up the pecking order in the final round of the 2008 season after inking a deal to drive in the National Class with Astuti Motorsport.
Mill has driven his 2001-spec Dallara this season with great success in the Trophy Class this season and winning on nine occasions; often mixing it with the leading National Class cars in both qualifying and the races.
After wrapping up the Trophy title two rounds ago, Tasmania will be his first chance to show what he's capable of against the established class elite, in equal machinery as he takes the track in a Dallara F304 Renault-Sodemo.
”Andrew will be getting into a car that has run in the front of the National Class this season, so he'll be in a car capable of racing with the guys that have been fighting for the class title all season long,” team boss Sam Astuti said. ”We're really pleased to be able to get Andrew in a car and give him a chance to race against the other 04 cars in equal machinery. Based on some of his performances this season there is every chance that he could win the class – because he's already been close to it despite racing his '01 Dallara in the Trophy class.
”With Andrew joining us in the National Class, Ray Chamberlain going to his home race and Mat Sofi in his best form in the outright battle, the team is really looking forward to a successful weekend in Tassie this September.”
Mill said he was looking forward to the chance to work his way further up the order with the Astuti team.
”In the '01 car we've had to work really hard to try and hang on the back of them [National Class cars] in qualifying, and then try to pick a few of them off during the races,” he said. ”I finished ninth (outright) in both races at Phillip Island and after that we decided to take the plunge and get into an 04 car and see what we could do at Symmons Plains. I'm looking forward to it and having the same car as everyone else to go and tackle the National Class and see how we go.”
