Euro: Lancaster targets home win
28 August 2008
Jon Lancaster will hope to secure his second F3 Euroseries win in as many meetings as the series heads to Brands Hatch this weekend for the latest rounds of the year.
The ART Grand Prix ace took victory in the second race of the weekend at the Nurburgring last time out for his maiden win since moving into the series at the start of the year.
The teenager then went on to finish in a fine podium position in the annual F3 Masters event at Zolder behind team-mates Jules Bianchi and Nico Hulkenberg and will look to carry that form into his home round of the campaign.
“It's important to get a good qualifying time as it's so hard to overtake in Formula 3 and Brands will be no exception,” he said. “In the last few races we've struggled slightly in that area which means we're always on the back foot when it comes to the races. The race pace has always been there and has produced some good results however I need to get near the front in qualifying.
“Hopefully we can put that right this weekend and start off at the front which will give us a much better chance of getting a good finish in the opening race of the weekend. However the opposition is very close this season; there are a lot of quick drivers out there many of whom are race winners so the qualifying will be a battle in itself.
“I like the Brands circuit though, and hopefully knowledge of the track will give me a bit of an advantage over the others. There are some fantastic corners like Paddock Hill Bend and Druids where it can all end in tears. While the last corner is make or break as it's very technical and you can't push too much or you lose time all the way to the line.”
Lancaster added that he was excited about the prospect of racing on home soil, with the presence of F1 star Lewis Hamilton set to bring even more fans through the gates.
“It's always very special to race in front of a home crowd,” he said, “and this weekend has the extra buzz of featuring Lewis Hamilton doing demonstration laps in the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes which will undoubtedly bring out the crowds and produce a fantastic atmosphere.”
