Nico Hulkenberg has moved another step closer to the 2008 Formula 3 Euroseries title after snatching pole position for the latest round at the Circuit di Catalunya.
The German headed to the latest round with a 13 point advantage over Edoardo Mortara, a margin that has now increased by one after prevailing in a tussle for the top spot with ART team-mate Jules Bianchi.
Bianchi was heading for a second consecutive front row position but was edged by fellow Frenchman Yann Clairay, the SG Formula driver scoring both his and team's best starting position of the season in second.
It was a good day all round for the French team as Richard Philippe, who has switched from Carlin Motorsport, secured fourth position on the grid. Christian Vietoris, who is looking for some consistency this weekend, was fifth quickest, just ahead of top Brit and leading Manor driver Sam Bird.
Mika Maki will start seventh, ahead of Henkie Waldschmidt, who completed SG Formula's excellent day by recording his first top ten starting position of the season. Robert Wickens starts as the best of the Volkswagen-powered drivers in ninth, while Dani Clos rounds out the top ten.
Meanwhile, fading title contender Mortara has left himself with plenty of work to do after only qualifying 15th, while Renger van der Zande, who is third in the standings, fared even worse in 19th.
Elsewhere, Brits James Jakes, Jon Lancaster and Niall Breen will start 11th, 21st and 24th respectively.
