British Formula 3 National Class driver Steven Guerrero has undergone emergency surgery after being involved in a road accident in his native Colombia.

Guerrero was seriously hurt on Thursday night when he collided with a truck whilst driving a motorcycle in the streets of El Guamo, a city north of the capital Bogota.

The 19-year-old suffered head injuries and led injuries that required surgery after neurological tests revealed he could have suffered brain damage.

Colombian newspaper El Tiempo has since reported that there were no complications during surgery, but that Guerrero remains in a critical condition.

Guerrero, who finished as the runner-up in the British F3 National Class for T-Sport, was in El Guamo to participate in the national karting championship.

"Last night we heard the distressing news from Colombia that one of our drivers, Steven Guerrero, had been involved in a road traffic accident," read a statement from T-Sport team principal Russell Eacott.

"Having spoken to the Guerrero family I know that Steven is receiving the best possible medical attention and my thoughts and prayers, and those of the entire team at T-Sport, are with him and his family at this difficult time."
