Chilton `has to nail it` in 2009.

Max Chilton has admitted that he has to make the most of his drive with Carlin as preparations continue for the 2009 British F3 International Series season.

Having driven for Hitech during his only full-season to date, the teenager will now move to the defending champions for the coming campaign and has been on the pace during testing so far at the wheel of the team's Dallara – now fitted with a Volkswagen engine for the 2009 season.

Chilton will still be one of the youngest drivers on the grid when the new season begins at Oulton Park and he said he was excited by the opportunity in front of him.

“I'm really looking forward to it,” he told Crash.net. “It'll be my third year and I've really got to nail it to be honest. I'll be with Carlin, which I know are a good team after finishing one-two-three this year. I've been testing with them and I was quickest - even though Autosport said I wasn't. I'm looking forward to it, it should be good.”

Chilton added that he was hoping for more than in 2008 when, after impressive pace in the off-season and a solid start to the year at Oulton, the year failed to produce the anticipated results.

“It was only my second year in single-seaters but the start of the season was definitely better than towards the end,” he said. “During the middle of the season we got a bit confused and were really having some quite bad results and then towards the end we started to pick them back up but we never got back to where we'd started off the season.

“I think it's going to be great [this year]. Carlin have a lot more cars than Hitech and a lot more data. They are so good and have been doing it for so many years; they've got so much knowledge. Volkswagen are also going to be pushing really hard to get the first wins with their new engine. It's good to be part of VW.”
