Euro: Bianchi opens seasonal account

Jules Bianchi has secured his first win of the F3 Euroseries season after leading home team-mate Valtteri Bottas to a one-two finish in the opening race at Lausitz.

Bottas had qualified on pole for only his second event and led through the opening six laps before Bianchi was able to find a way past on lap seven and pulled out a lead over his team-mate to secure a win that puts him into the lead of the championship standings ahead of Sunday's second race.

“I am happy with my first win of this year and with my first place in the points' standings, which means a lot to me,” he said. “After the season opener at Hockenheim a fortnight ago, we worked on the car and it already was significantly better here. I could overtake Valtteri because he had made a mistake. I hope to score more points tomorrow.”

While he admitted to being disappointed not to win, Bottas was still able to take a fine second place, while Jean-Karl Vernay completed the podium in third place.

Brendon Hartley took a solid fourth for Carlin after holding off the challenge of Sam Bird, while sixth went to Roberto Mehri after a long battle with Henkie Waldschmidt and Christian Vietoris, who ultimately finished seventh and eighth. The result means Vietoris will start the second race from pole thanks to the reverse grid rules.

A first lap incident saw Atte Mustonen unable to build on his third place on the grid for the new Motopark Academy team, with a collision with Alexandre Marsoin forcing him to retire.
