Euro: van der Zande wins on return

Renger Van der Zande marked his return to Formula 3 Euroseries competition by claiming Motopark Academy's first-ever victory at this level in Spain.

The Dutchman, who competed in British Formula 3 for the most part this season, joined Motopark Academy for this weekend's event as a replacement for Atte Mustonen, scoring a point in the first race before converting his pole position into a comfortable victory.

Leading from almost lights-to-flag, van der Zande was delighted to complete a fourth career Euroseries victory.

“I am really happy that I managed to win here. We are a new team and we are working hard to achieve results like these. I did my second event for Motopark here and first had to get used to the Kumho tyres again. Now, I am very optimistic for the two remaining events of thus season.”

Alex Sims finished behind van der Zande for his second podium finish of the weekend, a result that moves the rookie up to fourth position in the standings as a result.

His feat, however, was arguably overshadowed by that of Basil Shaaban, who followed up his first points at international level yesterday by backing it up with a maiden podium finish for Prema Powerteam.

“Being on the podium here is just awesome,” said the Lebanese driver. “Yesterday, I scored my first points in an international race and today the first podium. I am so happy! The decision to change to the Prema Powerteam for this season has given me an additional boost.”

Just behind, Christian Vietoris was fourth after being unable to get on terms with Shaaban, although the German was able to resist Jules Bianchi, the Frenchman scoring two points to keep his title hopes on course heading into the final two rounds. Valtteri Bottas completed the points positions in eighth.
