Vernay wins qualifying race

Jean-Karl Vernay wins the opening F3 race of the weekend on the streets of Macau
F3 Euroseries racer Jean-Karl Vernay has taken victory in the qualifying race for the annual end of season Macau Grand Prix.

Vernay had qualified second on the grid behind the TOM'S car of Marcus Ericsson but got ahead of the polesitter following a restart on lap four and held the lead for the remainder of the race.

The Signature Plus driver had got ahead of Ericsson at the start only to lose the lead again as the pair battled down to Lisboa for the first time, with Ericsson benefitting from a slipstream to find a way back into the lead.

However, the deployment of the Safety Car following an accident involving Jake Rosenzweig then allowed Vernay the chance to get back into the lead and he got a slipstream on the run to Lisboa to retake the lead.

Although he then extended his advantage over Ericsson, Vernay's victory was secured when Wayne Boyd crashed in the latter stages of the race, ensuring the race finished under caution and handed the Signature man victory.

“My start was good, but I had no chance against Marcus Ericsson on the way to Lisboa,” he said. “On the other hand, I had a great slipstream after the restart and was able to overtake him. It was good for me that the race ended behind the safety car, because like that, Marcus had no opportunity to attack me once again.”

Having lost the lead, Ericsson came under pressure from Edoardo Mortara behind with Mortara getting ahead on lap eight only to give the place back when the move was made under yellow flags.

Ericsson was then secure in second when the caution came out while Mortara had to settle for the final place on the podium. Valterri Bottas was fourth ahead of Laurens Vanthoor with British F3 title winner Daniel Ricciardo rounding out the top six.
