Vitaphone Racing will start its challenge for another victory in the Total 24 Hours of Spa from the front three positions on the grid after three rain-affected qualifying sessions for the Ardennes classic.
Less than 20 minutes of the available qualifying time was run in dry conditions before rain arrived, meaning the times set early on would ultimately decide the grid for the biggest event on the FIA GT Championship schedule.
Alex Muller posted the quickest time at the wheel of the #2 Maserati MC12, with a best lap of 2min 18.030secs – some 30 seconds quicker than the car would manage when the rain arrived.
That time put more than half a second clear of Vitaphone's third car – entered for the race under the Vitaphone (DHL) banner, with Alessandro Pierguidi posting a time some half a second slower. Andrea Bertolini slotted into third in the #1 car to complete a 1-2-3 for the Maserati squad.
The DKR Engineering Corvette C6.R – now entered under the banner of Sangari Team Brazil – was fourth quickest ahead of the similar car entered by SRT while the top six was completed by the first of the 2010-spec GT1 machines – the Marc VDS Racing Ford GT.
GT2 honours went the way of AF Corse, with Gianmaria Bruni posting the eighth quickest time overall, more than a second clear of Tim Mullen in the first of the CRS Racing cars. Top Porsche honours went to Trackspeed, with Jorg Bergmeister posting the third quickest time.
In G2, Phoenix Racing led the way with its Audi R8 LMS in 17th overall, while there was an impressive performance from the leading G3 machine – with Thomas Mutsch just missing out on a top ten overall slot for Matech Racing. Matech will run two GT3 Ford GTs in the race having elected not to compete with its GT1 machine.
Two cars failed to qualify within the qualification maxima, although neither went out on track during the driest phase of qualifying. The Pecom Racing Ferrari was two-tenths of a second away from making the required time while the #175 BMW Alpina B6 GT3 also failed to set a quick enough time – although it did set a quick enough time during pre-qualifying.
