Nissan rewarded with podium

The new NISMO-developed Nissan GT-R battled through a difficult debut in the Spa 24 Hours to secure a podium finish in the GT1 class of the Ardennes classis.

The Nissan, entered by the Gigawave Motorsport team, was one of two cars in the race running to the new 2010 FIA GT1 regulations, with former F1 driver Anthony Davidson coming in alongside regular pair Michael Krumm and Darren Turner for the event.

The car qualified eighth on the grid and ran as high as fourth overall before drivetrain issues early on Sunday morning led to the loss of over an hour in the pits for repairs to be carried out.

Once the repair were completed, the car returned to the track and climbed back up the order from 19th place to finish 13th overall and third in class in what was its debut in a round the clock race.

"The team has done a cracking job and I think they should be very proud of what's been achieved this weekend,” Turner said. “Normally, it's quite common for teams to do a 30-hour test prior to the event and to put as much mileage on the car as possible. But NISMO and Gigawave MotorSport have been brave and done this testing in a public domain, in the heat of competition, which adds a lot of pressure. The fact that the Nissan GT-R has finished the Spa 24 Hours at the first attempt, it's a real credit to the car."

Davidson meanwhile, in his first outing in the race, said he was delighted with how the event had gone.

"It's never easy running a new car for 24 hours and the team has done an outstanding job to get it to the finish,” he said. “Aside from one technical issue, everything ran like clockwork. I've really enjoyed being here, racing with the NISMO and Gigawave MotorSport team, and my team-mates have been fantastic. We really gelled.

“As for the car, reliability seems good. The NISSAN GT-R's engine, in particular, has proven to be extremely robust. All three drivers have given it death over the weekend and it's hung on in there!"
