Massa plans November kart comeback

25 September 2009

Felipe Massa will test his recovery from the head injuries he sustained in qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix by taking part in the annual Champion of Champion kart event he helps to promote and organise.

The Brazilian has confirmed that he intends to use the Florianopolis event - which attracts many of his F1 contemporaries for some end-of-season fun - to evaluate his fitness levels as he works towards a return to the grand prix scene in 2010. Massa suffered life-threatening head injuries after being hit by a spring shed from countryman Rubens Barrichello's car during qualifying at the Hungaroring, but continues to make steady progress after various surgical procedures.

An F1 return at Monza had been considered at one point, but the 1008 world championship runner-up has now decided to focus his attention on making the Ferrari line-up for next year's season-opening Bahrain GP. In the meantime, he will pit himself against the likes of former Florianopolis winners Barrichello and Michael Schumacher in the 27-29 November event.

"I'm going to take part again in the challenge of the stars, which is one of the most trendy end of year events," Massa revealed in a promotional video, "It's an incredible party, which gets the best drivers from all areas of the [motorsport] world - F1, IndyCars, stock cars."
