Villeneuve still working on F1 return

29 April 2010

Jacques Villeneuve says he is still working towards a return to F1 despite missing out on the chance to make a comeback in 2010.

The former title winner was one of the drivers linked to Stefan GP before it became apparent that the Serbian outfit wasn't going to be granted an entry into the sport, but the 38-year-old insisted that he was still working on keeping fit should an opportunity to make a return emerge either later this year or in 2011.

“I'm carrying on anyway,” he told Auto Motor und Sport. “The last year has shown that teams may elect to change their drivers during the season. The return of Michael Schumacher and Pedro de la Rosa is also a sign that experience is once again more valued by teams.”

Speaking in the Canadian press, Villeneuve also praised former team-mate Jenson Button for the way in which he has started his McLaren career, and said he felt the Briton had showed himself t be the leading driver in the field in wet conditions.

"To change teams and stay among the best shows that it was no fluke," he said. "I am really happy for him.

"Jenson was always quick in the rain but now he's becoming increasingly recognised as the best in the field. Michael [Schumacher] always had that reputation in the past but I think Jenson has passed him now in the minds of observers."
