POLL: Does Vettel have what it takes to be champion?
30 August 2010
While no-one doubts that he is one of the quickest drivers currently in Formula One, serious questions were once again raised about Sebastian Vettel's ability to put together a championship challenge after his clash with title rival Jenson Button in Belgium.
The German admitted to mistakes in qualifying that left him only fourth on the grid, but he was quickly up to third and harrassing a hobbled Button for second as the race moved onto lap 15.
However, both drivers saw their race effectively ended when Vettel attempted a passing move at the Bus Stop chicane that ended in disaster, sidelining Button and requiring Vettel to make an unscheduled pit-stop for new nose.
The Red Bull driver claimed that he had been caught out by a bump as he attempted to move from the inside of the road, where he had been looking for a gap to pass Button, to the outside. Button, meanwhile, questioned exactly where his rival thought he would be able to put the RB6 without a collision being inevitable.
Vettel's race only got worse as, having had to serve a drive-thru' for the Button incident, he suffered a puncture after later misjudging a pass on Force India's Tonio Liuzzi. In all, he made five visits to the pits, and finished down in 15th place.
With title rivals Lewis Hamilton and Red Bull team-mate Mark Webber occupying the top two steps of the podium, Vettel is now 31 points adrift of the championship lead with six races to run.
With that in mind, we want to know whether you think that Vettel has what it takes to be an F1 world champion, or whether he is lacking certain elements that will ultimately deny him the sport's top prize.
