Sauber: We’re the best place for a rookie

3 May 2011

Peter Sauber has said his F1 team is the ideal place for a rookie driver on the back of a solid start to the season from Sergio Perez.

The Mexican has yet to score this season although he would have picked up points on his debut in Australia had it not been for a post-race exclusion handed out to the team after an issue with the rear wing was discovered.

The impressive performances from the GP2 graduate come on the back of Kamui Kobayashi's solid debut campaign with the Swiss team last year and Sauber said it was an indication of the fact that his outfit is a wise choice for youngster looking to make it in the sport.

"I am particularly pleased that once more it has paid off to work with young drivers," he wrote in a column for Sonntagsblick. “To go with a rookie is always a risk, but it has worked for us again this time.

"It's not just about making the right choice, but just as much important to give them an environment where they can develop. I think that without exaggeration I can say that for a F1 rookie there is no better place than Sauber.”

Kimi Raikkonen, Felipe Massa, Robert Kubica and Sebastian Vettel were all given their chance in F1 in Sauber cars; albeit with the latter two debuting in the sport when the team was owned by BMW.
