DC: The challenge is to beat Vettel
19 May 2011
David Coulthard insists the focus for the F1 field can only be on beating Sebastian vettel to top spot after the German's impressive start to the 2011 campaign.
Vettel's victory in Istanbul was his third in four starts this season and leaves the defending champion 34 points clear of closest rival Lewis Hamilton.
The Red Bull driver is also unbeaten in qualifying heading into the fifth round of the season at Catalunya this weekend and Coulthard insisted Vettel was doing a good job to make sure most of the action so far this season has been behind him on track.
“There has been a lot action just behind the top spot, which has been dominated by Sebastian Vettel,” he said. “But that is always the challenge for the other teams and drivers to try and outperform the benchmark – and he is the current benchmark.”
Coulthard added that the technical changes made to the sport over the winter, and which have led to much debate amongst fans, have only served to improve the spectacle in 2011, with drivers forced to work to get the best they can out of both KERS and DRS.
“I think that DRS, KERS and Pirelli have created some interesting debate amongst the fans but for me, F1 is all about technical challenge and man and machine working together,” he said. “You have tools at your disposal and you have to use them to the best of your ability.”
