Chandhok focused on 2012 race seat

23 August 2011

Karun Chandhok says his focus for the remainder of the F1 season is on securing a race seat for 2012 and not worrying about whether or not he will be on the grid for the first Indian Grand Prix.

Chandhok made his race debut for Lotus in Germany having signed up as test and reserve driver at the start of the year, with suggestions that he could join countryman Narain Karthikeyan in being on the grid when India play host to its first F1 event.

However, speaking to the Hindustan Times, Chandhok insisted that his decision to join Lotus hadn't been made because of an offer to drive in his home race and said that his focus at the moment was on trying to secure a full-time drive next year.

“The big picture is so much better now,” he said of the decision to take up Lotus' offer of a reserve role. “I am strongly involved in the development of the car and have been out there for four Fridays now. Before the end of the season, I will be driving five to six Fridays. For 2012, I am looking at a potential full-time race seat.

“[However] there's no deal [for India]. It's just another wrong perception like the belief that I paid to get into Lotus.”
