Friday practice to include session for testers only in 2012?

2 September 2011

FIA president Jean Todt is hoping to revise Friday practice next year and have one session dedicated solely for test and reserve drivers.

His proposal has been tabled in a bit to help young drivers make the step up to the pinnacle of the sport in the wake of restrictions on in-season testing.

Although it looks like there may be some changes on that front next season [see separate story - click here], the plans for Friday practice, according to reports by Finland's Turun Sanomat, will see the current two 90-minute practice sessions split into three 60-minute sessions, with the opening one reserved solely for test and reserve drivers.

Such a proposal would be good news for the likes of McLaren's third driver Gary Paffett and Ferrari's Jules Bianchi, who would both then benefit from track time during an F1 weekend.
