The news came as a particular shock to Buemi, with the newspaper Le Matin
reporting that he missed calls from both team boss Franz Tost and Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko as he was driving the Catalunya circuit in the Red Bull simulator and visiting the Toro Rosso wind tunnel in the UK at the time.
“I was shocked,” he said. “I had been told a decision would be made before the end of the year, but I was under the impression that my contract would be extended. I was not expecting it at all.”
Speaking to Blick
, Buemi added that his options for the 2012 season were now extremely limited with only Williams and HRT likely to have vacancies for next year.
“I have to accept it even if it is very hard to understand,” he said. “Maybe there are options, but it's still too early to say anything. Fortunately in the past years I have built up many contacts with most of the teams. So this pays off now.”
