Di Montezemolo: We weren’t happy with Massa

23 December 2011

Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo has upped the pressure on Felipe Massa ahead of the 2012 F1 season by stating that the team wasn't happy with the Brazilian's performance during 2011.

Massa failed to make it onto the podium throughout the season and took a best finish of only fifth, leaving him with a points tally less than half that of team-mate Fernando Alonso.

Speculation had suggested that that form had put Massa's role with the team at risk, and although the Brazilian will remain alongside Alonso next year, di Montezemolo insisted that improvements were expected next season.

“Massa is the first to admit disappointment at the way his year went, a feeling we share,” he said, “but I hope and believe that with a faster car and one that warms up its tyres better, Felipe will be competitive once again. We should not forget he was often quicker than Michael [Schumacher] or Kimi [Raikkonen], when he was team-mates with them.”

Ferrari has been linked with Robert Kubica if the Polish driver is able to return from the injuries he sustained in a rallying accident earlier this year, and while stating that Massa could remain with the team if his results improve next season, di Montezemolo also confirmed that other drivers are being looked at if the Brazilian doesn't get the job done.
