Todt: Massa still a good driver, will recover

29 December 2011

FIA president and ex-Ferrari team boss Jean Todt believes Felipe Massa will come good in 2012.

Massa had an awful season this year and scored only 118 points in total, less than half that managed by his team-mate, Fernando Alonso. Indeed while Alonso took ten podiums, including one win, Massa in contrast did no better than fifth. Despite that though, Todt, has faith the Brazilian can and will turn his fortunes around, even if some do claim he hasn't been the same since his accident in 2009 in Hungary.

"He struggled with the transition to Pirelli tyres, but he is still a good driver and will recover," Todt told Corriere della Sera. "Alonso is the point of reference not just for him but for everyone. Felipe was three tenths away from him, not three seconds."

Meanwhile, Todt also added that 2011 wasn't as bad for the Scuderia as some have made out, especially given the Adrian Newey-designed Red Bull RB7 was so dominant.

"Stefano [Domenicali]'s role [as team principal] is the eye of the storm," Todt continued. "I was also constantly the subject of criticism [when I held the same position] and I'm proud that in the end I made the decision about how I should retire after all the risks that I would be fired.

“It was claimed that they did not have a competitive car but I don't agree. The Ferrari was not as good as the Red Bull but in any case it was still a good car," he concluded.
