Buemi to get Le Mans wish?

23 January 2012

Sebastien Buemi appears set to have wish to race at this year's Le Mans 24 Hours granted amid rumours that he is to be snapped up by a potential racewinner.

The Swiss driver was dumped by Scuderia Toro Rosso at the end of 2011 after failing to demonstrate that he had the potential to be a future world champion, but has been retained by Red Bull to act as reserve driver for both of its teams during the 2012 F1 campaign.

Keen to keep his hand in, however, Buemi has made no secret of his desire to race in another category, targeting sportscars and the Le Mans 24 Hours in particular as the round the clock classic does not clash with a grand prix this year.

While there has been no announcement forthcoming from the Buemi camp since he revealed his interest, Swiss newspaper Blick believes that the 23-year old will be revealed as a late addition to the Toyota line-up for Le Mans.

According to the report, the announcement could be made as early as today (23 January), and would see Buemi teaming up with fellow F1 refugees Alex Wurz and Kazuki Nakajima, who were named, along with former GP2 rival Nicolas Lapierre, back in November.

Sportscar racing should come as no surprise to Buemi either, for both his grandfather and cousin - Georges and Natacha Gachnang - have competed in the discipline.
