de la Rosa returns to GPDA chair

6 March 2012

Pedro de la Rosa has agreed to return to the role of chairman of the Grand Prix Drivers' Association following previous incumbent Rubens Barrichello's switch to IndyCars in 2012.

The Spaniard previously held the position between 2008-10, only relinquishing it when he returned to a full-time race seat with Sauber, but had agreed to retake control when it became apparent that Barrichello may not be able to retain a foothold in F1. When the Brazilian was subsequently replaced at Williams by Bruno Senna, and decided to move to the USA to partner friend Tony Kanaan at KV Racing Technology's IndyCar operation, de la Rosa fulfilled his pledge and stepped in to fill the void.

Ironically, the 41-year old Spaniard - who confirmed his return to head of the GPDA with Spanish news agency EFE - will also return to a full-time race role in F1 in 2012, having been signed to a two-year deal by backmarker HRT.
