Di Montezemolo hopes predictions are false

7 March 2012

Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo says he hopes that predictions that the new Ferrari won't be in contention for podium finishes at the start of the season prove to be incorrect.

Technical chief Pat Fry said he didn't expect the new F2012 to be in contention for the podium following the final test of the season in Spain at the weekend, where the car again failed to challenge the front-runners – aside from a qualifying run from Alonso on the final morning.

However, di Montezemolo has now said he is keen to see those comments proved wrong when the season starts – adding that he would demand answers if Ferrari are off the pace.

"I hope that the predictions about us are wrong,” he was quoted as telling Gazzetta dello Sport. "If they are true, I will want to know why this has happened and how much time it's going to take to put it right.”

Di Montezemolo added that he wasn't sure where the team stands but that there was potential still be unlocked in the F2012.

"I spoke to Alonso and he said that there are many positive features on the car, but it will take time to unlock their potential,” he said. "It's a car still to be discovered and only in Melbourne will we know where we are."
