Vettel: We have to find the balance
16 March 2012
Sebastian Vettel has said it will be 'important' Red Bull Racing make a 'step' tonight following a less than convincing performance today in practice, ahead of this Sunday's season opening Australian Grand Prix.
Vettel was only eleventh in first practice and only tenth in the second session, finishing the day down in twelfth on the combined times. Speaking afterwards, the 2010 and 2011 F1 world champion, admitted it was frustrating not to be able to do more laps in the dry.
“I think obviously with the conditions it's difficult to get a lot of running, but it was the same for all of us. The little time we had in the car this afternoon was okay, but now we have to find the balance and learn a bit more about the car,” he said.
“The important thing now is to make a step overnight and go from there. Track time is important when the car is still young.”
Mark Webber, however, had a better day in the sister RB8 and was fifth on the combined times. Like Vettel though, he was disappointed with the conditions.
“We did learn a little today – but after nine weeks of anxious waiting it was a shame with the weather. Mother Nature played a big role and it made it quite challenging for everyone,” Webber continued.
“We got some dry running at the end of each session, which was good. The track was drying out reasonably quickly, but there were still a few sections at the end that were damp. In the end we got what we could out of it, but we still have some work to do.
“It was compromised running for everyone; I'm looking forward to coming back tomorrow,” he summed-up.
