Mansell praises Button maturity

27 March 2012

Former F1 champion Nigel Mansell has praised Jenson Button for his maturity in admitting fault over his clash with Narain Karthikeyan in the Malaysian Grand Prix.

The McLaren driver hit the rear of Karthikeyan's HRT in the early stages of the Sepang race, damaging his front wing and ultimately knocking him out of the race for victory.

Following the race, Button admitted he had been at fault for the clash and Mansell said it was a sign of the Briton's maturity to hold his hands up over an clash he personally felt was more of a racing incident.

“It shows fantastic maturity [to admit the mistake was his fault],” he told TalkSport. “Jenson's a fantastic driver. I thought it was a 50-50 call. When a car is that slow and you know you have faster cars around you, you have to pay attention and he should have given way.

“Jenson was very good about it. It was a racing incident and the conditions didn't help.

“When you commit a little bit in those conditions, you haven't got the grip to slow the car down as quickly as when in the dry. If that was on a dry day then there would have been no contact.”
