Barrichello urges Massa to 'relax'

4 April 2012

Former Ferrari driver Rubens Barrichello has urged fellow Brazilian Felipe Massa to try and relax in an effort to recover form after his tough start to the 2012 F1 season.

Massa has endured a fraught time in the opening two rounds of the new campaign and finds himself behind Marussia pair Timo Glock and Charles Pic in the standings based on the results of the Australian and Malaysian races.

By contrast, team-mate Fernando Alonso tops the championship standings, with the pressure on Massa having increased after Sergio Perez – a Ferrari development driver – followed Alonso home to take second in the race at Sepang.

Speaking to Globoesporte.com>/i>, Barrichello said he felt Massa still had the speed needed to join Alonso in running towards the front of the field, but said he felt his countryman had to try and get his head sorted to regain the kind of form that saw him challenge for the title back in 2008.

“It is not a problem of speed,” Barrichello said, “but something that he has to try and resolve himself. He needs to close his eyes, enjoy himself and remember that he races because he likes it. There were times that I lost myself a little and had to remind myself that I was racing because I like it.

“He should relax. This is a moment and you have those moments in Formula One.”
