Ferrari honours Villeneuve on 30th anniversary

8 May 2012

Ferrari has honoured the late Gilles Villeneuve with a special event at Fiorano on the 30th anniversary of his death.

Villeneuve died at the age of 32 in an accident during qualifying for the 1982 Belgian Grand Prix at Zolder, when his Ferrari was launched in a sickening roll after hitting the rear of the March of Jochen Mass.

In memory of the Canadian, regarded as one of the greatest drivers in the history of F1, Ferrari held a special event today at its test track, where Jacques Villeneuve was invited to drive the 312T4 as raced by his father in 1979.

The car took Villeneuve to victories at Kyalami, Long Beach and Watkins Glen as he finished second in the championship standings behind team-mate Jody Scheckter.

Villeneuve Jr, winner of the F1 title in 1997, was joined at Fiorano by other members of the Villeneuve family, former mechanics who worked with his father during his F1 career and members of the current Ferrari team.
