Montezemolo happy with way Ferrari has bounced back

6 June 2012

Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo has said he is very happy with the way the Maranello-based team has reacted this year after a rather lacklustre start to F1 2012.

Despite the early problems with the F2012, the team has made progress and number one driver Fernando Alonso has exploited its potential to the maximum from the off, winning in mixed conditions in Malaysia and scoring points in every single race, something that has put him top in the 2012 F1 World Championship standings going to Canada this weekend for round seven.

Such has been Ferraris response that Montezemolo is confident now they do have a real chance this season, although he concedes the team still has work to do to catch up with the likes of Red Bull and McLaren.

“Definitely yes, it's possible,” he replied in an interview with CNN when asked if the Scuderia can claim the title in 2012. “We must try to win and I am very proud of the fact that, since 1997 to today, apart from a very few years, Ferrari has either won or missed out by a whisker.

“We have always been at the top. In this sport, it's difficult to win, but even harder to constantly stay at the top. At the beginning of the year, I was very disappointed in the car as it was not what I had expected it to be, but we have fantastic people in the team.

“I push them very hard and they work day and night. I have every confidence in [team principal] Stefano Domenicali, in whom I invested for the future. Alonso is fantastic and I am also very pleased with how [Felipe] Massa's weekend went in Monaco: I'm counting on him to take valuable points off our competitors.

“However, there is a lot of work to do, because I am not yet satisfied. Some days ago, I sent a message to all the team, underling the fact that winning depended on us alone. Everyone must give their all. We must be perfect. Each one of us must secure pole position in our own jobs.

“We still need to improve the car and I am very happy with the way the team has reacted,” he underlined.
