Alonso questions Kubica return

21 August 2012

Fernando Alonso has questioned whether or not Robert Kubica will ever be fit enough to return to a Formula One car nearly 18 months his horrific accident while taking part in a rally in Italy.

Kubica was left with serious injuries to his arm and leg when an armco barrier penetrated the cockpit of his Skoda Fabia during the accident on the Ronde di Andora rally back in February last year.

His injuries were enough to sideline Kubica for the entire 2011 season while he was also forced to give up his dream of making a return to the sport this year when it became apparent that his injuries wouldn't have healed enough to allow him to get back behind the wheel.

Prior to the accident, Kubica has been hotly tipped to join forces with Alonso in the Ferrari line-up but the current points leader admitted he wasn't sure if Kubica would now ever be able to drive competitively again, never mind secure a role with a front-running team.

"It's very hard to say whether Robert will return to 100 per cent fitness and be able to race again in Formula 1," Alonso told F1 Racing. "Now and again we speak and I know how much it hurts him to be so far away from what has always been his world.

“He has to keep calm and think first and foremost about recovering total functionality of his body, then he can think again about racing."
