Marko: Vettel needs to qualify better
30 August 2012
Helmut Marko insists that Sebastian Vettel can still secure the F1 title for a third successive season this year, but needs to improve his qualifying results if he is to challenge Fernando Alonso.
Last year, Vettel only failed to qualify on the front row once all season as he stormed to the title but by contrast, he has so far only managed a front-row start on four occasions in 2012.
Quoted by the German publication Bild
, Red Bull advisor Marko said improved qualifying was required if Vettel is now going to try and make it three successive titles – with Alonso currently 42 points ahead and seeking a 24th straight points finish this weekend at Spa.
"The title is still entirely feasible for us," Marko said. "But Vettel needs to do better in qualifying.
"Vettel doesn't need five wins, but he can't have any more failures. Alonso's run is going to end sometime soon, and when it does we have to be there."
Marko also insisted that Vettel wasn't the only Red Bull man who would be given the chance to fight for the title, with Mark Webber also still in contention – and indeed two points head of Vettel in the standings ahead of the Belgian GP.
"With us, both drivers may be world champion,” he said. “So Webber can go for the title too.”
