Mallya: We can still catch Sauber
18 September 2012
Sahara Force India team boss Vijay Mallya insists that Sauber aren't out of reach in the F1 title race despite Sergio Perez taking another podium finish at Monza.
Sauber now sit 37 points clear of Force India heading to Singapore this weekend, with just seven races remaining before the end of the season.
However, while many have commented on whether or not Sauber can catch Mercedes for fifth spot, Mallya insisted that his team hadn't given up hope of wrestling sixth from its Swiss rival.
“There have been various moments where they've drawn away and we seemingly can't catch them, but all it takes is a podium finish that brings in a lot of points, and if we get a couple of them, we could still chase them down,” he said. “We haven't had our fair share of luck yet this season. Take the case of Spa – it was probably as close as we've had to a podium finish, but once again, it was not to be. But I'm an optimist and I don't give up!
“It's tough, Williams are strong, Sauber are strong. And look at what's happening with Lotus. A lot of teams that were regarded as midfield teams last year are now pushing the big boys pretty hard.”
With the team having gone well on street circuits earlier in the year, di Resta said he was hopeful of a strong weekend for the Silverstone-based squad.
“I had a good race there last year and we've seen already that the car has been strong on street circuits this year,” he said. “So I'm hoping that we will go well there, optimise the set-up and pick up some good points. I think it's a track everybody enjoys and it's an interesting race because of the unusual schedule.”
