McNish: Vettel needs to win title in Austin

11 November 2012

Allan McNish believes it is essential Red Bull Racing's Sebastian Vettel clinches the 2012 F1 drivers' title in Austin, Texas next weekend.

The Sky Sports F1 analyst, who finished second at Le Mans this year and who raced in F1 with Toyota in 2002, added that if things do go to the wire in Brazil, then that could favour Fernando Alonso and Ferrari, as not only do the Scuderia traditionally shine at Interlagos, but rain could also be a threat.

“From my point of view – he [Vettel] has to tie it up in Austin,” McNish said during the latest edition of The F1 Show. “The last place I would want to go in a title battle with Alonso is Brazil.

“In Brazil Ferrari have historically been good and it can rain. If we remember all of the wet races so far this season then Fernando really does come into his own. He is extremely good in these situations.”

Fellow Sky Sports F1 pundit Anthony Davidson meanwhile isn't so convinced and reckons only reliability and mistakes will stop Vettel from taking his third title in succession.

“Let's not kid ourselves - Vettel is in the best car compared to Alonso definitely,” Davidson chipped in. “I think the only thing that is standing in Vettel's way is reliability and mistakes from the team.”

“I think it is going to go down to the wire [though] - I think it is going to go to Brazil,” he continued.

“We have seen mistakes happen, don't forget team personnel are getting tired as well as the engines - they are running out of life quickly the engines. So reliability is going to come into it and we have already seen mistakes happen - just look at Vettel's team in Abu Dhabi [and what happened in qualifying],” Davidson concluded.
