GP3 boss pleased with F1 graduates

7 December 2012

GP3 boss Bruno Michel says he is delighted by the fact that two series champions will compete in F1 in 2013.

2010 champion Esteban Gutierrez – the first man to win the GP3 crown – will join the grid with Sauber next season as the replacement for Sergio Perez, while the man who followed him on the list of GP3 champions, Valtteri Bottas, will also be on the grid with Williams.

Both used their success in GP3 as the springboard into an F1 testing role before earning their race seats and Michel said he was proud to see the pair make it onto the grid.

“When we launched GP3, we wanted to create a clear path for young drivers towards GP2 and F1,” he said. “We carefully crafted the best tools to prepare them for the next steps and we have seen for the past three seasons that not only did GP3 attract some of the greatest and most promising talents in motorsport, but it's become a real platform for them to make it to the ultimate step as Gutierrez and Bottas have proven.

“Having two of our Champions already in F1 after such a short period of time is beyond our expectations and talks volume of the quality of our Series.”
