Vettel, RBR nominated for Laureus Awards again

14 December 2012

Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull Racing have been included on the list of nominations for the 2013 Laureus World Sports Awards.

The nominees were revealed by Laureus World Sports Academy chairman Edwin Moses and fellow Academy member and two-time F1 world champion, Emerson Fittipaldi in Rio de Janeiro on Thursday, where the awards ceremony will be held on March 11 2013.

Vettel, who of course won his third F1 drivers' title in succession this year, will go up against Olympic 100 metre and 200 metre gold medallist Usain Bolt, Olympic 5,000 and 10,000 metre winner, Mo Farah, Barcelona FC star, Lionel Messi, swimmer Michael Phelps, who became the most decorated Olympian with 22 career medals back in the summer, and Tour de France winner and Olympic Time Trial gold medallist Bradley Wiggins, in a bid to claim the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year accolade.

Red Bull Racing meanwhile has been nominated for the Laureus World Team of the Year honours again following its third successive Constructors' Championship. Other nominations in the Team category include China's Olympic Table Tennis Team, the European Ryder Cup Team, the US Miami Heat Basketball team, Spain's Men's Football Team and the United States' Men's Basketball Team.

Former Williams and Lotus F1 driver Alex Zanardi has also been named in Laureus World Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability category after his success in the London Paralympic Games hand cycling events. Zanardi took two gold medals and one silver.

“I always feel in an Olympic year that you are likely to see a strong group of potential Nominees and this year is certainly a great example of that,” said Laureus World Sports Academy chairman Edwin Moses.

“The Laureus Sportsman of the Year Award particularly is going to be one of the closest contests ever when you look at the wonderful collection of names we have, with the likes of Usain Bolt and Michael Phelps and newcomers like Mo Farah and Bradley Wiggins. But the list goes on, in every category. This is really the crème de la crème of sport.”
