Perez: I have to deliver
9 January 2013
Sergio Perez admits that the pressure is on to deliver in the 2013 F1 season after the Mexican paid a visit to his new McLaren team on Wednesday.
Perez flew in from Mexico to meet the team he will race for this season after his switch from Sauber, and also took questions from the press about his hopes for the year ahead.
Speaking to Sky Sports News
, Perez admitted that he could only have one aim ahead of the new season with beating team-mate Jenson Button and fighting for the championship title being his target.
“When you come to McLaren, this [winning the World Championship] must be your target, otherwise you shouldn't join McLaren,” he said. “Everybody here is working for that goal and I'm coming here to do the same.
"Jenson is a very fast driver and one of the best in the world. It's a guarantee he will be fast and competitive. I will have to make my own space, but I think I will be able to work with Jenson. I've got a lot to learn from him but at the same time I want to beat him."
Perez added that moving to McLaren would allow him to improve as a driver after a 2012 campaign that saw him secure three podium finishes for Sauber, but also saw him suffer a number of disappointing races towards the end of the campaign.
"Being here at McLaren will help me improve in many areas," he said. "It will be much more intense than I have been used to. I think once the season starts will look again at where we can improve, but first of all we have to go to testing and Jenson and I will have to do everything we can to make sure we have a competitive car."
