Ecclestone 'super impressed' with Sochi

4 February 2013

Bernie Ecclestone says he is 'super impressed' with the new circuit in Sochi that will play host to the first Russian Grand Prix.

Ecclestone paid a visit to the city on Monday to see how work is progressing on the new venue, which is being built around the Olympic Park that will host the 2014 Winter Games.

Speaking after his visit with Russian deputy prime minister Dmitry Kozak, Ecclestone admitted to being impressed with the work that had gone into the circuit to date, with around half of the tarmac required for the track having now been laid.

“It's a fantastic track. I was here before the building work started on the track and I was already impressed then,” he was quoted by R-Sport. “Now I'm super-impressed with what's going on here.”

Following his tour of the circuit, Ecclestone was able to meet with Russian PM Vladamir Putin, who re-iterated earlier comments that the race is set to be run in the latter stages of next year as part of the legacy of the Olympics.

“A Formula One competition obviously will be a significant addition to the entire Olympic infrastructure and help us to use many of the facilities from the Olympic Games in the sense of Olympic legacy,” he said.

“I think that, as we planned, we will be able to host the first race in October 2014.”
