Chilton: Rookie pairing not ideal

12 February 2013

F1 debutant Max Chilton has admitted that it isn't ideal to be part of an all-rookie line-up for his first season in the sport but says he and Luiz Razia can still help push Marussia forwards in 2013.

Chilton looked set to team up with experienced German Timo Glock before his departure for financial reasons – with Razia being signed up as his replacement.

Quoted by Motorsport-Total.com, Chilton revealed he had been looking forward to working with Glock but said Marussia could still have a good year – even without the former Toyota drivers experience.

“It is not ideal,” he said of the team's all-rookie pairing, “and we will sometimes have a hard time. I had been looking forward to being Timo's team-mate because he is very experienced but I'm sure we will have no problems as we wouldn't be in F1 if we weren't capable.”

Chilton added that the all-new line-up would mean there was no number one within the Marussia team, with both drivers given equal status.

"Neither of us is a number one or number two, because we are both rookies,” he said. “The team will treat us the same and will help us.

“I'll be watching Luiz's data and he will look at mine. The team has three years of data and feedback, and although it would be nice to have an experienced team-mate, the team will be able to help us with that information.”
