Hamilton: Mercedes have definitely made some 'really good steps'
14 March 2013
Lewis Hamilton has said Mercedes have 'definitely made some really good steps forward' over the winter and that he is already feeling pretty 'comfortable' with his new team.
Hamilton will make his race debut with Mercedes this weekend in Australia and while he concedes there 'is still lots to do', he is happy with how things are going after opting to make the switch last year and end his long association with McLaren.
“I feel comfortable in the car. I feel we've definitely made some really good steps forward,” he commented ahead of the F1 2013 season opener at Melbourne's Albert Park. “We've still got a lot of work to do.
“Obviously, normally when you go to a new team it takes a while to get settled in but I'm still working as hard as I can to make sure that feels as comfortable as possible.
“I think it just takes time and as time goes on I think I'll get even more and more comfortable in the team.”
Meanwhile, despite the change, he added that his life isn't actually that drastically dissimilar to what it was last year.
“It's not that much different. [But] it's put me [personally] in a better place [moving to Mercedes]. I'm settling into the team pretty well. It's still a F1 team and they still exist to win [at the end of the day].
“The guys are doing a fantastic job and I'm really excited about the season and excited to get back in the car,” he remarked.
Hamilton did, however, note that while the final Barcelona test was very positive for Mercedes – with Lewis topping the times on the penultimate day and team-mate, Nico Rosberg setting the pace on the last day - it would be ill-advised to read too much into it.
“[I'm] not particularly any more excited [after the final Barcelona test], I think. You can't really take too much from the tests,” he concluded.
