Whitmarsh: I'll be disappointed if we don't take another step in China

1 April 2013

McLaren boss Martin Whitmarsh has said he will be 'disappointed' if the team don't take 'another step' in China.

McLaren opted to go radical with their new 2013 F1 car, the MP4-28, even though last year's car was considered one of – if not – the fastest. In contrast, a lot of the other teams opted for more evolutionary designs, and to date the gamble by the Woking-based outfit hasn't paid off.

Indeed the season opener in Australia was something of a nightmare, and while Malaysia more recently looked a lot more positive and the squad made rapid progress - with Jenson Button commenting he might have got on the podium but for a botched pit stop - McLaren still has some way to go before it will be up and challenging at the front.

“We've got some good data and I think we've now got an opportunity to go out there [to China] and improve upon it,” Whitmarsh told ESPNF1.com. “We know what we had [in Malaysia] isn't optimal for various reasons. We did some experiments, it responded to those experiments and I would be very disappointed if we don't take another step in China and that's what we're going to do.”

“We've got to get better. We can improve the car. I think the improvements we made [at Sepang] were not just circuit related,” he added.

“I think we made some small steps forward with the car. Not as much as I'd like but some reasonable steps,” he concluded.
