Pirelli tweaks hard tyre

25 April 2013

Pirelli has announced a tweak to the hard compound tyre ahead of the start of the European F1 season in Spain.

As was the case in 2011, the Italian manufacturer has revealed that the orange tyre will have a new compound from Barcelona onwards, with Pirelli having made the decision based on the performance of the tyres seen so far in 2013.

“After evaluating tyre performance over the balance of the first four races, we took the decision – in consultation with all of the teams – to change the hard compound from Spain onwards, as we did in Barcelona two years ago when we also introduced a new hard tyre for the rest of the season,” Pirelli motorsport boss Paul Hembery said.

“This latest version of the hard compound is much closer to the 2012 tyre, with the aim of giving the teams more opportunity to run a wider range of strategies in combination with the other compounds, which remain unchanged.”

The new compound hard tyre will debut in Spain where it will be used alongside the medium tyre while the soft and supersoft will then be the offering in place for the Monaco Grand Prix – as has been the case for the past two years.

The medium and supersoft tyres will be then be used for the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal.
